This is not a spoiler post.
Dealth Hallows was amazing. But for right now, I'd not like to talk about it. I'd like to talk, instead, about Sorting.
Do you think that Sorting is part of the problem with the wizarding world...and with our world? Labels, names, isn't that all part of it? Judging people before you know them based on what House they're in, what ethnicity they're part of, what race? Based on blood? All that pureblood/mudblood nonsense - isn't that like racism? And doesn't that stem from, early on, being Sorted based on your abilities? Based on your heritage? Your personality? Your talents that you can't even help having or not having?
But then, it isn't. Because Harry was able to choose. He chose NOT to be in Slytherin. And it is that element of choice that sort of makes the Sorting not all that terrible. No one is forcing anyone anywhere. It is up to you to decide. Up to you to choose where your allegiance lies.
But still, it's a debate inside me.
So let's all play Sorting hat. It is your first day of Hogwarts. You are being Sorted. Where do you think you would be Sorted? Would you accept that or would you ask the Sorting hat to put you somewhere else, like Harry did? Where would you put yourself? Why?
If you're feeling really creative, you may also come up with your own Sorting song, but for now, we'll stick with this one:
Oh you may not think me pretty,But don't judge on what you see,
I'll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.

You might belong in Gryffindor,

Gryffindor, though there's something in each that's for me.
I'll give my answer.
I think I'd place into Gryffindor and I'd stay there. This is why:
1. This is something I know about myself but my teacher confirmed it in a letter of recommendation - I am passionate about certain things and I go after my passions. This I see as a Gryffindor trait.
2. I identify a lot with Neville in that I have a lot of fears, but I stand up to them when I have to.
3. In a very Ron-ish and Hermione-ish way, I can get flared up when I'm angry or annoyed. I do identify with Ron the most out of all the HP characters, I think, in my insecurities.
4. It's not such a good thing, but I'm kind of a black and white thinker, which I also associate with Gryffindor.
5. I have a strong, passionate desire to make everything right in the world and I have ambition to rise to the top while doing it.
6. This one just seals it - love of Knights, the chivalrous days of old, going on quests, adventures, etc.
Why I would not be in the other houses:
Slytherin - I'm not subtle enough to be in Slytherin. I'm too blunt, too obvious. Nor do I care about a lot of things the Slytherins deem important, like blood and race.
Hufflepuff - My work ethic is not like a Hufflepuff's. I am not a hard worker and I am not patient.
Ravenclaw - While I can be analytical, I am not brainy, nor am I wise. I don't value study over other things. I don't pore over books looking for answers. In short, I am not really Ravenclaw material.
I think the sorting hat takes bribes.
I don't think that I "fit" into any of the houses. Of all of them, I think I come closest to Hufflepuff, but even there, I don't think I have the work ethic to hack it.

Scraps - I don't think anyone fits completely into just one House. Everyone has certain traits that belong in each House - the question is, which are your more dominant traits? When you think of yourself, which traits seem clearest to you? Which traits do you take pride in? Which are you ashamed about? I think it is this that differentiates between the houses. Someone can be sly and clever but hate that about themselves and not want to be in Slytherin - and they can argue with the hat to put them somewhere else, like Harry did (although, to be honest, Harry's personality doesn't fit for Slytherin anyway, only his talents do).
I think most people choose where they want to go. I'm willing to bet the Sorting Hat came very close to putting Hermione in Ravenclaw, for instance. I think she even says at much at one point. If you notice, everyone on the Hogwarts Express who voices what House they hope to get into gets into that House. It's just interesting. It's all based on choice, really, and where you see yourself thriving most.
